Empowering Women Farmers: A Call to End Gender-Based Violence

The Small-Scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria (SWOFON) has urged the government and key stakeholders to take decisive steps in addressing the pressing issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) that affects women farmers across the nation. This appeal was voiced during a consultative forum held in Abuja earlier this week.

Mrs. Comfort Sunday, the FCT Coordinator of SWOFON, emphasized the critical need for collaborative action to tackle the intersection of hunger and GBV, which disproportionately impacts smallholder women farmers. She called for the enforcement of existing laws, the development of supportive policies, and the promotion of grassroots awareness to protect women’s rights and foster community dialogue.

Highlighting the pivotal role of smallholder women farmers in driving Nigeria’s agricultural economy, ensuring food security, and promoting rural development, Mrs. Sunday pointed out that these women face systemic barriers, including GBV, which undermine their productivity and well-being. She noted that the repercussions of GBV extend beyond personal harm, leading to economic disempowerment, mental distress, and disrupted farming activities.

According to Mrs. Sunday, addressing GBV is not only a matter of human rights but also an essential step towards achieving food security, economic advancement, and sustainable development. By safeguarding women farmers and providing them with the resources to thrive, their full potential can be harnessed, contributing to stronger, more resilient communities.

SWOFON appealed to the government, civil society organizations, the private sector, and individuals to unite in the fight against GBV. This collective effort is crucial to creating an environment where women farmers can flourish without fear, enabling them to continue their vital contributions to Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.
