The Federal Government has applauded Borno, Yobe, and Bauchi States for establishing Ministries of Livestock Development, a move that aligns with the Presidential Initiative to create a Federal Ministry of Livestock Development. This development has been described as a significant step toward transforming the livestock industry across the nation, enhancing policy coordination, and accelerating growth in the sector.
Speaking at the Continuing Education Program for veterinary professionals in Abuja, the Honorable Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, praised these states for their leadership in advancing livestock policies. He highlighted that Borno and Yobe recently created their respective ministries, while Bauchi State just joined the effort during the Presidential Committee on Livestock Development’s working visit to the state. This growing commitment at the subnational level, according to the Minister, demonstrates strong support for federal efforts to standardize livestock production and improve the sector’s global competitiveness.
The Minister stressed that the establishment of these ministries is vital to addressing key challenges such as livestock migration, animal health, breed improvement, and ensuring food and water security for livestock. He outlined immediate priorities, including the development and enforcement of milk collection regulations, conducting a nationwide livestock census, taking inventory of value chain establishments, and launching comprehensive vaccination programs. These efforts, he explained, are essential to achieving sustainable development in the livestock industry and unlocking its potential to access international markets.
During the event, themed “Veterinarians as Policy Advocates: Giving Voice to Animal Health,” the Minister emphasized the indispensable role of veterinarians in shaping policies that safeguard animal health and welfare. He expressed optimism that the upcoming National Council on Livestock Development will benefit from robust state-level representation, providing a platform for unified decision-making to drive progress in the sector.
The Federal Government has appealed to states yet to establish their Ministries of Livestock Development to prioritize this initiative, underlining its importance for achieving economic growth and food security. As Borno, Yobe, and Bauchi set the pace, their actions serve as a model for other states, demonstrating the transformative potential of dedicated livestock ministries in fostering development and supporting Nigeria’s agricultural future.
