The North Central Zonal Conference on Women and Youth in Agribusiness and Entrepreneurship recently concluded in Ilorin, Kwara State, with a strong appeal for all levels of government to empower citizens through agricultural vocational training for sustainable progress.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Oloruntoyosi Thomas, highlighted Kwara State’s dedication to inclusive governance. She emphasized that 50% of the state’s agricultural initiatives are reserved for women, youth, and individuals with disabilities.
“Women and youths are integral to every program we design because we understand their pivotal role in driving economic transformation,” Thomas said, as reported by Omotola Ashaolu, the Press Secretary for the Ministry.
The Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Nafisat Buge, encouraged participants to view agriculture as a respectable and lucrative endeavor. “Agriculture is not a dirty job; it’s a noble and rewarding enterprise contributing significantly to our economy,” she remarked, urging attendees to seize the opportunities within the sector.
Jafar Abubakar, Director-General of the Nigeria Agric Business for Women and Youth Farmers Entrepreneurs (NABG), reinforced the importance of agribusiness in fostering independence and spurring economic growth. He stressed the role of technology in boosting agricultural efficiency and productivity, saying, “Women, who form half of our population, already make substantial contributions to GDP. Leveraging technology and innovative practices in agriculture can propel them to even greater heights.”
Abubakar commended Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for youth-centered policies in Kwara State, adding that investing in agribusiness would help combat unemployment while advancing food security and economic transformation nationwide.
One of the standout moments of the conference was a presentation by Abdulafeez Alao, a participant from Kwara State. He showcased “Eedu-Ramoni,” an eco-friendly briquette made from farm waste, designed to serve as a sustainable substitute for wood-based charcoal. The innovation, which supports environmental conservation while offering economic benefits, received widespread acclaim.
The conference concluded with the recognition of outstanding entrepreneurs who have excelled in various agribusiness ventures, inspiring attendees to explore the diverse opportunities within the agricultural value chain.
This event underscores Kwara State’s leadership in promoting inclusive, sustainable development through agriculture, reaffirming its commitment to empowering marginalized groups and fostering economic growth.
