Plateau State Invests N3.6 Billion to Revolutionize Agriculture

Plateau State is making significant strides in agriculture with a landmark investment of over N3.6 billion in fertilizers and essential farming inputs. This announcement was made by Governor Caleb Mutfwang during his New Year State Address in Jos, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to bolstering food production and agricultural activities.

Governor Mutfwang revealed that a comprehensive database of over 300,000 farmers has been established, paving the way for the launch of an online input distribution system designed to enhance efficiency and transparency in resource allocation.

The state has entered advanced discussions with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to include Plateau in the development of the Special Agro Processing Zone. Additionally, BARC Farms, a critical agricultural entity, has seen partial reactivation with the introduction of private investments to establish feedlots.

Trials for crops like wheat and barley, as well as grasses such as Napier and Brachiaria, have been successfully conducted, setting the stage for mass production by 2025. Work is also set to begin this January on redesigning and constructing the Kuru Livestock Centre, further solidifying Plateau’s status as a leader in livestock and crop production. Through the Agricultural Services and Training Centres (ASTC), over 6,000 hectares of farmland have been cultivated to aid displaced communities in reclaiming their livelihoods.

In a strategic move to facilitate the export of perishable crops and vegetables, the government has finalized plans to upgrade the Yakubu Gowon Airport into a cargo hub. This development is expected to open new markets for Plateau’s agricultural produce, enhancing the state’s contribution to the national economy.

To ensure farmers receive fair value for their produce, the Plateau Commodity Marketing Company (PLACOM) has been established. This initiative addresses challenges in commodity trading, warehousing, and market information systems while eliminating exploitative practices by middlemen.

Governor Mutfwang’s administration has also attracted both local and international investors, fostering economic growth and diversification. Agreements have been signed for the revitalization of key hospitality assets, including the Hill Station Hotel and Plateau Hotel, with the first phase expected to be completed by December. Plateau State’s forward-thinking approach to agricultural development is setting a new benchmark for regional growth, ensuring food security, and creating sustainable livelihoods for its citizens.
