A violent conflict between herders and farmers in Miga Local Government Area of Jigawa State has led to the tragic loss of nine lives, with four others sustaining injuries. The incident occurred on the morning of Friday, January 3, 2025, in Gululu village.
According to reports, the violence began after thieves, suspected to be herders, allegedly broke into a shop and stole goods. Villagers, in pursuit of the thieves, arrived at a Fulani settlement, where tensions escalated into a deadly confrontation.
Witnesses, including the village head, Malam Muhammad Sarkin-Dori, revealed that herders attacked the villagers with bows and arrows, injuring four people. In retaliation, the villagers launched a counterattack, setting fire to homes in herder settlements across Miga and neighboring Jahun Local Government Areas.
The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that law enforcement teams were dispatched to restore order. Sadly, nine bodies were recovered and taken to hospitals in Miga and Jahun, where doctors confirmed their deaths. The police continue to investigate the situation to prevent further escalation.
This tragic event highlights ongoing tensions between herders and farmers in the region, often fueled by disputes over land and resources. Similar clashes have been reported in other parts of Nigeria, including a recent incident in Nasarawa State that claimed three lives.
