Ekiti State Set to Soar as Nigeria’s Agro-Allied Export Hub with New International Cargo Airport

In a landmark development, Ekiti State has taken a significant step toward becoming Nigeria’s leading agro-allied export hub with the operationalization of the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport. Governor Biodun Oyebanji announced this transformative achievement during his New Year address, highlighting its potential to drive economic growth, food security, and global trade connectivity.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) recently approved a six-month license for non-scheduled flight operations at the airport, commencing December 13, 2024. This crucial testing phase will pave the way for full operations, slated to begin on June 15, 2025.

“This is a monumental leap forward for Ekiti. The readiness of our airport to handle non-scheduled flights marks a new era of economic opportunity and progress,” Governor Oyebanji stated. He hailed the development as the perfect New Year gift for the state’s citizens, emphasizing its alignment with his administration’s vision for Ekiti to serve as a gateway to global markets.

The state’s new cargo airport is expected to facilitate the export of agricultural produce and establish Ekiti as a hub for agro-allied exports, positioning it to harness opportunities in international markets. The initiative underscores Ekiti’s commitment to enhancing food production, infrastructure, and public service delivery, with Governor Oyebanji predicting unprecedented progress in 2025.

“Our ultimate goal is to transform Ekiti into Nigeria’s agro-allied export powerhouse. This breakthrough will not only boost food production but also generate employment and drive sustainable development,” the governor affirmed.

He expressed gratitude to the state’s past and present leaders, traditional rulers, political stakeholders, and Ekiti’s diaspora community for their unwavering contributions to the state’s development. Governor Oyebanji also thanked the Federal Government, President Bola Tinubu, and other key agencies for their continued support.

As Ekiti embarks on this new chapter, the state anticipates a ripple effect of growth and prosperity, further solidifying its role as a leader in Nigeria’s agricultural and economic transformation.
