Kogi State Establishes Ministry of Livestock Development to Boost Agriculture

In a groundbreaking move, Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has approved the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development to transform livestock management and drive agricultural progress in the state. This announcement, conveyed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Folashade Ayoade, underscores the administration’s commitment to sustainable development in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The newly created ministry aims to address critical challenges in the livestock sector, enhance productivity, and open up economic opportunities for farmers and other stakeholders. Mrs. Ayoade noted that this decision would significantly bolster agricultural practices in Kogi, positioning the state as a leader in livestock management.

The establishment of the ministry fulfills a long-standing call from the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Kogi State chapter. Last year, NVMA Chairman Dr. Tolu Omotugba advocated for its creation, urging the appointment of a qualified veterinarian to oversee the ministry. During the launch of the Private Veterinary Practice (PVP) program in December, Dr. Omotugba emphasized the need for this initiative to sustain the successes of programs like L-PRES.

This bold step is expected to revolutionize the livestock sector in Kogi State, tackling existing challenges, improving productivity, and empowering livestock farmers. With this development, Kogi is set to lead the charge in Nigeria’s agricultural transformation, creating a resilient and prosperous future for its farming communities.
