Borno State has made history by unveiling the Ngarannam Livestock Improvement and Ranch Settlement in Mafa Local Government Area, a groundbreaking initiative designed to modernize livestock management, enhance productivity, and foster peaceful coexistence. Spearheaded by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum with federal government support, this project marks a significant milestone in addressing economic and social challenges in the region.
Professor Attahiru Jega, Co-Chair of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Committee, praised the initiative as the first of its kind in Nigeria, highlighting Governor Zulum’s vision and leadership in driving economic growth and restoring livelihoods. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Jega noted that the project reflects a commitment to transforming the livestock sector into a driver of sustainable development, creating employment opportunities and uplifting communities affected by insecurity.
Covering 10 square kilometers, the Ngarannam settlement is equipped with modern infrastructure, including housing estates, veterinary clinics, schools, health centers, breeding facilities, and dairy and beef processing units. The settlement also features milk collection hubs, pasture development centers, sustainable water supply systems, and security outposts to ensure a secure and self-sufficient environment. This comprehensive approach is designed to benefit both livestock and the communities that depend on them, making it a model for sustainable agriculture in Nigeria.
Governor Zulum emphasized that the project extends beyond livestock production, focusing on job creation, youth and women empowerment, and reducing the farmer-herder conflicts that have long plagued the region. Each of the 461 nomadic families resettled in the community received a home, pairs of cattle and goats, as well as essential supplies to restore their livelihoods. This empowerment initiative aligns with the Borno State 25-year development plan and the governor’s 10-point agenda for rebuilding and transformation.
The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, described the project as a national model, lauding Borno State’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by herders and farmers. Alhaji Baba Usman Ngelzelma, President of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), commended the government for its efforts in minimizing conflicts and supporting herders, particularly those affected by insecurity.
This landmark initiative is part of a broader strategy, with two additional ranching centers under construction across the state’s senatorial districts. According to Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur, these centers, nearing completion, reinforce the administration’s dedication to sustainable development and economic empowerment.
With its innovative approach, the Ngarannam Livestock Improvement and Ranch Settlement sets a new standard for livestock management and community development in Nigeria, paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for its citizens.
