Kogi’s New Livestock Ministry: NVMA Calls for Veterinarian as Commissioner

The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) in Kogi State has commended Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo for the swift creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development, emphasizing its potential to enhance the state’s agricultural sector.

In a press briefing, the State Chairman of NVMA, Dr. Omotugba Samuel Tolu, lauded Governor Ododo’s initiative and urged the appointment of a skilled and experienced veterinarian as the first commissioner to lead the ministry. He noted that such an appointment would ensure a solid foundation for the ministry’s success.

Dr. Tolu emphasized the critical role of animal health in safeguarding human well-being, warning against appointing individuals without relevant health or veterinary expertise to head the ministry.

“This strategic move by Governor Ododo has placed Kogi State at the forefront of livestock development, joining the ranks of progressive states implementing similar initiatives under the Federal Government’s vision led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” Dr. Tolu stated.

Highlighting Kogi’s unique position as a gateway state connecting northern, southern, eastern, and western Nigeria, Dr. Tolu remarked on the abundant livestock resources in the state. He stressed that this ministry would not only boost revenue generation but also create jobs, enhance livestock productivity, and strengthen the state’s disease surveillance and rapid response mechanisms.

Dr. Tolu also expressed optimism that the new ministry could help mitigate the long-standing herder-farmer conflicts, improve agricultural activities, and contribute to food security by stabilizing food prices.

The NVMA reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Kogi State Government to ensure the ministry achieves its goals and further advances the state’s agricultural sector.

The establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development marks a pivotal step in addressing the challenges and unlocking the potential of Kogi State’s livestock industry.
