The animal health workforce is crucial to supporting Africa’s growing livestock sector, ensuring sustainable food security, and protecting public health. A recent analysis reveals notable disparities in veterinary and paraprofessional capacities across the continent.
Leading the charge, Egypt boasts 29,244 veterinarians, while Nigeria follows with 11,369, showcasing strong investments in animal health. On the other hand, countries like Niger, Liberia, Eritrea, and Sao Tome & Principe face significant workforce gaps, highlighting an urgent need for capacity building.
Overall, Africa has over 115,000 veterinarians and 119,000 veterinary paraprofessionals (VPPs) working tirelessly to improve livestock health and productivity. However, to meet growing demands, enhanced regional cooperation, workforce mobilization, and targeted training programs are essential.
As we chart a path forward, prioritizing accurate workforce documentation and resource allocation will strengthen the foundation for a thriving animal health sector across Africa.
