The Federal Government of Nigeria recently confirmed an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, in Kano State. This announcement has raised nationwide concerns about its potential impact on poultry farming and public health.
Since the confirmation, Farm Alert has reported additional cases of HPAI in Kano State. The initial outbreak in Gwale LGA was followed by five more confirmed cases in Kabo LGA, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced vigilance and preventive measures.
What You Can Do
Farm Alert echoes the government’s call to action and urges poultry farmers, stakeholders, and communities to take the following precautions:
- Report unusual bird deaths immediately to veterinary authorities.
- Implement strict biosecurity measures, such as regular disinfection of equipment, limiting farm access, and proper disposal of carcasses.
- Quarantine new birds before introducing them into existing flocks to prevent the introduction of the virus.
As the outbreak continues to unfold, it is vital for all stakeholders to remain proactive and collaborate in controlling its spread.
