According to reports on the World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS) portal, an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly referred to as bird flu, has been confirmed in Katsina State.
Government Response
The Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria earlier issued a circular urging:
- Activation of surveillance systems to detect and respond to potential cases promptly.
- Enforcement of strict biosecurity measures to curb the spread of the virus.
- Public awareness campaigns to educate poultry farmers and traders on preventive actions.

- Report unusual bird deaths immediately to veterinary authorities.
- Implement strict biosecurity measures, including disinfection of equipment, restricted farm access, and proper disposal of carcasses.
- Avoid introducing new birds into existing flocks without proper quarantine and health checks.
