Kogi Assembly Appoints Dr. Olufemi Bolarin as Pioneer Commissioner for Livestock Ministry

In a groundbreaking move for Nigeria’s livestock sector, the Kogi State House of Assembly has confirmed Dr. Olufemi Bolarin as the pioneer Commissioner for the newly established Ministry of Livestock.

The confirmation took place on Tuesday during a plenary session in Lokoja, following a rigorous vetting process. Speaker of the House, Umar Aliyu, while reading the Governor Usman Ododo’s nomination letter, emphasized the legislature’s role in ensuring only qualified candidates assume critical positions.

After responding to inquiries from lawmakers, Dr. Bolarin was unanimously approved to spearhead the new ministry.

A Strategic Step for Livestock Development

Dr. Bolarin, who previously served as Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, as well as State Coordinator for the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project, brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.

Following his confirmation, he expressed optimism about the future of livestock management in Kogi State, noting that Kogi is one of the first states in Nigeria to establish a dedicated Ministry of Livestock.

He commended Governor Ododo’s foresight in modernizing the sector, emphasizing that the ministry’s key objective is to transition from traditional nomadic herding to structured, sustainable livestock farming.

“The ultimate goal is to phase out nomadic herding and embrace modern agriculture,” Dr. Bolarin stated.

He further revealed that Kogi State will leverage investment opportunities to establish globally recognized standards in livestock production, improving productivity and enhancing farmers’ livelihoods.

A Model for Other States?

Dr. Bolarin’s appointment signals a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s livestock industry, positioning Kogi as a potential model for other states seeking sustainable agricultural transformation.

Stakeholders are optimistic that this strategic move will enhance food security, attract investment, and foster economic growth in the livestock sector.
