In a remarkable stride toward economic revitalization, Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has commissioned the Banki International Cattle Market alongside two other significant projects in Banki, Bama Local Government Area.
The newly established Banki International Cattle Market, covering an expansive 450m x 450m area and enclosed within a 1.8 km perimeter fence, is designed to enhance cross-border trade and provide economic empowerment. This state-of-the-art facility includes 12 large ruminant sheds, three small ruminant sheds, lock-up shops, open market stalls, a water supply system, and an administrative block featuring three offices, a conference hall, and modern conveniences.
Performing the ceremonial tape-cutting was Midjiyawa Bakari, the governor of the Far North Region of Cameroon. Governor Zulum highlighted the market’s crucial role in fostering economic growth and strengthening trade ties between Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad.
“As part of our commitment to reviving commerce and cross-border exchange, we have developed the Banki International Cattle Market to replace a previous, smaller market destroyed by years of insurgency. This market will serve as a key trading hub, supporting regional economies and restoring livelihoods,” Zulum stated.
Education and Infrastructure for a Brighter Future
In addition to the market, the governor inaugurated a 20-classroom day secondary school equipped with laboratories, three units of 3-bedroom staff quarters, and five blocks of ten 2-bedroom teachers’ residences. This initiative aims to provide quality education for Banki’s youth and ensure a conducive learning environment.
Further reinforcing educational opportunities, Zulum announced an admission quota for primary school graduates from Amchide and Limani, two neighboring Cameroonian communities, allowing them to enroll at the newly established secondary school in Banki.
“We are implementing student exchange programs to foster cultural integration and international relations. By allowing pupils from Cameroon to continue their education here, we are strengthening ties and promoting educational inclusivity,” he noted.
The final project unveiled was the Government Lodge, built to accommodate high-ranking officials and dignitaries visiting Banki. This facility aims to improve administrative efficiency and provide a comfortable setting for government engagements.
Stakeholder Endorsement and Dignitary Attendance
The Shehu of Bama, Umar Ibn Kyari, and the chairman of the Bama Reconstruction Committee, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, praised Governor Zulum for his dedication to infrastructural development and economic recovery.
The high-profile event saw the attendance of Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, House of Representatives members Dr. Zainab Gimba and Engr. Bukar Talba, as well as legislators from Bama Central and Gulumba Woloji. Dignitaries from Cameroon, including Kaltume Midjiyawa, wife of the Far North Region governor, and senior government officials, also graced the occasion.
A Step Towards Stability and Prosperity
The inauguration of these landmark projects signifies a major leap in Borno State’s post-conflict recovery. By bolstering trade, education, and governance, Governor Zulum continues to pave the way for a more prosperous and interconnected region, reinforcing Borno’s position as a key player in regional commerce and development.
