Plateau State Reshuffles Cabinet, Creates Ministry for Livestock Development

In a strategic move to enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen livestock management, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has announced a cabinet reshuffle, which includes the creation of a new Ministry for Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries. This decision reflects the administration’s commitment to boosting food security, improving veterinary services, and advancing the livestock sector in the state.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in Jos by Mr. Samuel Jatau, Secretary to the State Government (SSG). The restructuring follows the swearing-in of five newly appointed commissioners and the reassignment of existing ones to various ministries.

New Ministry to Boost Livestock Sector

A major highlight of the reshuffle is the establishment of a dedicated ministry for livestock and veterinary services, signaling a targeted approach toward improving animal health, disease surveillance, and fisheries management. The newly appointed Dr. Sunday Akpa will oversee the ministry’s operations, ensuring that policies and programs are tailored to support livestock farmers, enhance veterinary services, and promote sustainable fisheries development.

With agriculture being a major economic driver in Plateau State, the creation of this ministry is expected to streamline livestock policies, expand access to veterinary healthcare, and foster innovations in animal husbandry and aquaculture. Stakeholders in the livestock industry have welcomed the move, expressing optimism about increased government support and sector-specific initiatives.

Implications for Agriculture and Food Security

The creation of a specialized livestock ministry is poised to bring significant transformations to animal health, livestock productivity, and market access. Some expected outcomes include:

  • Strengthened veterinary services and disease surveillance systems.
  • Enhanced support for livestock farmers and animal health professionals.
  • Expansion of fisheries and aquaculture programs.
  • Improved access to livestock feed, vaccines, and extension services.
  • Better policy coordination to drive sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.

By establishing this ministry, Plateau State is aligning itself with national and global efforts to improve food security, boost agricultural resilience, and enhance economic opportunities for livestock stakeholders.
