In a bold move to strengthen livestock farming and drive economic progress, Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Radda, has launched a massive livestock empowerment program, distributing 40,000 goats worth over ₦5 billion to women across the state. This initiative is designed to boost rural livelihoods, enhance food security, and position Katsina as a major hub for livestock production in Nigeria.
The official distribution ceremony took place on Monday, February 17, 2025, with selected women from 361 wards benefiting from the program. Each recipient was provided with three female goats, one male goat, a bag of animal feed, and mineral salt to support sustainable livestock rearing. Speaking at the event, Governor Radda highlighted the project’s goal of economic empowerment, particularly for women, by creating a sustainable cycle where beneficiaries will return a portion of their livestock once they multiply, ensuring continuous support for other women in the community.
The governor assured that the selection process was transparent and community-driven, overseen by local development committees. He emphasized that this initiative is not just about distributing livestock—it is about transforming lives and ensuring long-term financial stability for families.
Beyond individual empowerment, the Katsina government is taking a strategic approach to modernizing livestock farming. Governor Radda announced plans for a ₦10 billion state-of-the-art abattoir to enhance meat production, processing, and exports. Additionally, the government will implement extensive training programs in modern livestock management, covering animal nutrition, disease prevention, and efficient breeding techniques. To further strengthen the livestock sector, a goat breeding center will be established in Rimi Local Government Area, aimed at genetic improvement and increasing productivity. Radda emphasized that this initiative aligns with national agricultural policies, commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, which will further support farmers and livestock stakeholders.
The program received widespread praise from traditional rulers, community leaders, and government officials. The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, commended the governor’s commitment to economic transformation, stating that the initiative will have a lasting impact, ensuring prosperity for women and their families while boosting the state’s agricultural economy. Hon. Yusuf Suleman Jibia, the Special Adviser on Livestock, emphasized the long-term vision of the project, ensuring beneficiaries receive continuous support, including access to veterinary services, disease prevention measures, and a structured repayment plan where recipients will return livestock after a set period to sustain the initiative. Each beneficiary will also receive a startup package, including essential feed supplements to support initial livestock management.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajia Hadiza Yar’adua, described the project as one of the most impactful empowerment programs for women in the region, urging recipients to maximize the opportunity for long-term financial growth. As Katsina takes giant strides in livestock development, this program is expected to significantly improve food security, enhance local meat production, and create economic opportunities for thousands of rural women.
Governor Radda concluded by stating that Katsina has the potential to be a livestock powerhouse in Nigeria, and by investing in women and equipping them with the resources to thrive, the state is laying the foundation for a more prosperous and self-sufficient future. This initiative stands as a model for inclusive agricultural development, with the potential to reshape livestock farming across Nigeria.
