ASITU Opposes Federal Government’s Plan to Establish Cattle Ranches in Southeastern Nigeria

The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has strongly opposed the Federal Government’s plan to acquire land in Imo State and other Southeastern states for the development of cattle ranches under the 2025 national budget. The proposal has ignited widespread resistance, with ASITU arguing that it prioritizes private livestock businesses over the critical needs of indigenous communities.

ASITU Raises Concerns Over Land Allocation

In an official statement, ASITU’s National President, Chief Emeka Diwe, criticized the initiative as unjust and divisive. He stated that while Igbo entrepreneurs struggle to secure land for their businesses without government backing, the federal administration is actively facilitating land acquisition for cattle ranching, a venture predominantly controlled by a particular ethnic group.

According to ASITU, the Southeastern region already faces land scarcity due to growing urbanization, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development. The additional pressure of allocating land for cattle ranching, a private enterprise, places an undue burden on local communities.

Government Support for Private Cattle Ranching Sparks Outrage

The union questioned why cattle rearing is receiving government attention while other businesses, particularly those owned by Igbo traders, do not enjoy similar privileges. ASITU stressed that livestock farming is a private enterprise and should not be funded with public resources at the expense of regional development priorities.

“Cattle ranching is a private business, and it is unfair for the government to use public resources to support one industry while neglecting others,” ASITU stated.

The group further argued that Igbo business owners in other regions of Nigeria often face bureaucratic challenges and even land seizures without any form of government intervention. This perceived disparity has intensified concerns of systemic marginalization.

Call for Policy Review and Equitable Land Use

ASITU has urged the federal government to reconsider its approach and focus on policies that promote inclusivity, economic equity, and national unity. The union warned that proceeding with the ranching initiative in the Southeast could lead to heightened tensions and socio-economic instability.

“We will not stand by as our ancestral lands are appropriated for private interests. The government must develop policies that serve all Nigerians fairly,” the statement emphasized.

As debates over land use and livestock management continue, stakeholders in the agricultural and business sectors are calling for transparent policies that balance economic growth with the needs of all communities. The controversy surrounding this proposal highlights broader discussions on land rights, business equity, and federal support for private enterprises.
