In a major push for livestock sector transformation, Nigeria’s Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has called for the establishment of specialized livestock colleges to address the unique challenges in animal agriculture.
During a meeting in Abuja with Professor Garba Sharubutu, Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), the Minister emphasized the need for targeted education and research in areas such as breed enhancement, disease control, and sustainable feeding systems.
Why Nigeria Needs Dedicated Livestock Colleges
Maiha highlighted that existing agricultural institutions may not fully meet the demands of Nigeria’s growing population. He urged stakeholders to invest in livestock-focused training centers, which will:
✅ Improve animal breeding programs for higher productivity
✅ Strengthen disease surveillance and control
✅ Enhance feed and fodder development for sustainable livestock nutrition
✅ Support research-driven solutions for modern livestock management
Transforming Grazing Reserves into Communal Ranches
As part of broader sectoral reforms, the Minister revealed plans to convert 417 grazing reserves into communal ranches. This initiative aims to:
🔹 Reduce open grazing and curb conflicts
🔹 Enhance livestock tracking and traceability
🔹 Boost pasture development through the cultivation of indigenous, drought-resistant grasses
Strengthening Agricultural Research for Livestock Development
Professor Sharubutu acknowledged the pressing challenges in Nigeria’s agricultural research landscape, including insufficient funding, inadequate veterinary facilities, and a shortage of skilled personnel. He called for stronger collaboration between the Ministry and ARCN to drive sectoral transformation.
A Step Toward a More Resilient Livestock Sector
The push for specialized livestock education and research-driven policies is expected to enhance food security, create employment, and boost Nigeria’s livestock value chain. By investing in science, innovation, and structured livestock management, Nigeria is positioning itself for a more productive and sustainable animal agriculture industry.
