In a significant move to enhance agricultural productivity, combat climate change, and strengthen food security, the Adamawa State Government has inaugurated a $525,000 World Bank-funded initiative under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project.
The program, launched in Yola, was formally introduced by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, represented by Deputy Governor Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta. The initiative aims to reduce farmers’ vulnerability, promote climate-smart agriculture, and create economic stability within the state.
Key Objectives of the ACReSAL Project
✅Strengthening Agricultural Resilience: Farmers will receive high-yield crop varieties, modern technology, and training to improve productivity while lowering production costs.
✅Mitigating Climate Change: The project focuses on sustainable natural resource management, addressing deforestation, desertification, and erratic weather patterns affecting food production.
✅Enhancing Water Resources: The Adamawa State Government has urged the Federal Government to dredge the River Benue, facilitating irrigation, water transport, and economic activities.
✅Economic Empowerment: The intervention will stimulate continuous agribusiness activities, fostering job creation, wealth generation, and financial security for local communities.
Government and Beneficiary Perspectives
Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, highlighted that the Federal Government’s collaboration with Adamawa State under ACReSAL will provide farmers with innovative farming techniques and access to improved seed varieties to enhance food production.
Additionally, Dr. Ibrahim Chinda, ACReSAL State Coordinator, emphasized that the project will ensure long-term sustainability in agriculture and environmental conservation.
Malam Raji Isa, a local farmer and beneficiary from Saminaka Cooperative Society, expressed gratitude for the intervention, stating that it would positively impact livelihoods, improve agricultural output, and create better business opportunities for farmers in the state.
A Step Towards Sustainable Agriculture in Nigeria
With food security becoming a critical priority, this initiative represents a strategic investment in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. By integrating climate-smart solutions, resource management, and government-backed support, Adamawa State is paving the way for a more resilient and self-sufficient farming system.
