Lagos Butchers Urge Speedy Completion of Eko Ranch to Boost Local Meat Production

The Lagos State Butchers’ Association has called on the state government to accelerate work on the Eko Ranch project, a large-scale initiative aimed at enhancing local cattle farming, reducing reliance on imported livestock, and strengthening food security in the state.

According to Alhaji Bamidele Kazeem, Patron of the association, the project holds immense potential for revamping the red meat value chain, improving hygiene standards, and ensuring better quality control in the livestock industry.

A Game-Changer for Lagos’ Meat Industry

The Eko Ranch, located in Gbodu community, Epe, spans 750 acres and is designed to increase local cattle production, thereby lowering transportation costs and ensuring that consumers have access to fresh, traceable meat.

“With the establishment of a fully operational ranch, Lagos State can significantly cut its dependency on cattle imports from regions like Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Northern Nigeria. This will improve efficiency, stabilize meat prices, and enhance food security,” Kazeem stated.

He further emphasized that the project would create employment opportunities, particularly for young people, and serve as a catalyst for economic growth within the state’s livestock sector.

Government Support is Key

Kazeem commended the federal government for setting up the Ministry of Livestock Development, which aims to streamline animal farming operations and bring Nigeria’s livestock sector in line with international best practices.

He also acknowledged the support from the Lagos State Government (LASG) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in providing training programs for ranch investors on modern animal husbandry techniques.

“As Lagos explores innovative strategies to address food security and economic sustainability, the Eko Ranch project stands as a critical step toward self-sufficiency in meat production,” he added.

The Future of Ranching in Lagos

The Lagos State Government has been urged to fast-track the provision of essential infrastructure needed for the ranch’s full-scale operations. Once completed, the ranch will not only support the butchering industry but also enhance traceability in meat supply chains, ensuring that consumers know the origin and quality of their food.

With proper investment and policy backing, this initiative could revolutionize meat production in Lagos State, making it a model for sustainable livestock farming in Nigeria.
