The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), is set to establish 20 model veterinary hospitals across the country’s six geopolitical zones to improve access to quality animal healthcare services.
According to Sanusi Abubakar, the National Project Coordinator for L-PRES, these hospitals will be distributed across 20 states, including Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Borno, Plateau, Niger, Kwara, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Ondo, Ekiti, and Oyo.
Strengthening Veterinary Services Nationwide
Seven of these hospitals are already under construction in Sokoto, Niger, Enugu, Ondo, Borno, Adamawa, and Edo states, with plans to scale up the number by the end of the year.
These state-of-the-art veterinary hospitals will:
✔ Enhance clinical services and provide essential animal health treatments
✔ Serve as training centers for veterinarians and veterinary assistants
✔ Offer mobile veterinary support through fully equipped ambulatory vehicles
✔ Reach over 450,000 livestock farmers in the first two years of full operation
To ensure sustainability, the L-PRES initiative is fostering Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), allowing private-sector veterinarians to operate within the facilities, enhancing efficiency and service delivery.
Bridging the Gap in Animal Healthcare
L-PRES, funded by a $500 million World Bank loan, is expanding Nigeria’s veterinary infrastructure as part of its mission to improve livestock productivity, commercialization, and resilience.
With veterinary hospitals strategically placed in key livestock-producing regions, Nigeria is taking a significant step toward self-sufficiency in animal healthcare while reducing the risk of livestock disease outbreaks and economic losses in the sector.
