Pasture Development as a Path to Peace: Gombe State Trains 67 Livestock Farmers Under L-PRES

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen livestock productivity and reduce resource-based conflicts, the Gombe State Government has successfully trained 67 livestock farmers in modern pasture development techniques. This initiative was carried out through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, aimed at enhancing the livestock value chain and promoting sustainable practices in animal agriculture.

During a media briefing in Gombe, Professor Usman Abubakar, L-PRES State Coordinator, emphasized the significance of pasture and water in reducing tensions between farmers and herders. According to him, limited access to fodder and water are core drivers of communal clashes, and tackling these challenges through structured interventions can lead to long-term peace.

“By introducing sustainable fodder production techniques and improving access to clean water, we’re minimizing the need for herders to encroach on farmlands,” said Abubakar.

Creating Livelihood Opportunities for Youths

The training not only targeted improved feed supply but also introduced pasture development as a viable agribusiness for youth and rural entrepreneurs. Participants were equipped with knowledge on cultivating high-quality forage crops, preserving feed, and integrating pasture systems into profitable livestock operations.

Mahmud Bello, one of the facilitators, highlighted that pasture cultivation offers a promising income stream and urged young people to explore the untapped potential of this segment within the livestock value chain.

Infrastructure Support for Sustainable Grazing

As part of broader L-PRES interventions, Gombe State has:

  • Rehabilitated key earth dams across grazing reserves,
  • Installed over 63 solar-powered boreholes to support livestock production hubs.

These infrastructure upgrades are designed to provide consistent water access and reduce pressure on contested resources.
