In a significant move to revamp Nigeria’s livestock sector, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has officially kicked off the National Livestock Transformation Programme (NLTP) at the Wase Grazing Reserve in Plateau State. This launch marks a strategic step under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at modernizing pastoral systems, fostering economic inclusion, and mitigating climate-related disruptions.
The Minister of Livestock Development, Mr. Idi Maiha, during a field visit to the Wase Grazing Reserve, described the initiative as a pilot scheme designed to unlock full value chain opportunities within the livestock ecosystem. While he acknowledged that the programme may not instantly resolve the region’s security challenges, he emphasized its potential to generate employment and stimulate rural development.
“We’re here to show what’s possible under the current administration. Through this transformation, we plan to reduce nomadic migration by investing in sustainable pastoral infrastructure,” said Minister Maiha.
Key components of the transformation plan include:
- Mass housing units for pastoral families
- Earth dams to support dry-season pasture irrigation
- Veterinary facilities for animal healthcare
- Primary healthcare clinics for pastoralist communities
- Complete reliance on solar energy to promote clean energy use and climate resilience
The Wase Grazing Reserve spans approximately 100 hectares, with the capacity to host over 20,000 cattle. This scale, according to the minister, is expected to attract milk and meat processing industries, cold storage facilities, and even renewable energy initiatives utilizing animal waste for bio-electricity and organic fertilizer production.
In his remarks, Dr. Sunday Akpa, Plateau State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries, described the programme as a welcome complement to the state’s ongoing efforts to enhance livestock production and infrastructure.
“The Plateau State Government remains fully committed to supporting this programme. It will drive innovation, reduce tensions over grazing routes, and position the state as a livestock hub,” Akpa added.
The minister also held strategic consultations with key leaders including the Governor of Plateau, the Gbong Gwom Jos, and the Emir of Wase, underlining the importance of stakeholder collaboration in ensuring smooth implementation.
