The Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has reiterated his determination to bring back to life the long-abandoned Songhai Integrated Farms—a once-promising agricultural model designed to enhance sustainable food production, create jobs, and promote agribusiness in the region.
This commitment was declared during a recent comprehensive project assessment tour across Tai and Obio-Akpor Local Government Areas. The tour included visits to several underutilized public assets such as the Model Primary Healthcare Center, Primary School One in Bunu Tai, the Mother and Child Hospital on the Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway, and the Dr. Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Diagnostic Center in Rumuokwuta.
During his interaction with local leaders and community members, Vice Admiral Ibas expressed deep concern over the decaying state of key state-owned infrastructure, especially the Songhai Integrated Farms, which he described as a wasted opportunity for the people of Rivers State.
“What we have seen is not just deterioration, but a setback for our economy, our food systems, and future generations,” Ibas said.
The Songhai model farm, established as a multi-functional agro-enterprise, was once considered a model for climate-resilient farming, agripreneurship, and rural economic empowerment. It combined modern agriculture, renewable energy, waste recycling, and agro-industrial production—all of which have since fallen into disrepair.
However, Vice Admiral Ibas has pledged to work with relevant partners to reposition the farm into a center of excellence once again—an initiative he says is crucial for boosting local food production, increasing youth engagement in agriculture, and addressing food insecurity in the state.
