Nigeria’s Livestock Sector Set to Benefit from New Local Animal Feed Factory

In a strategic move to advance Nigeria’s livestock development and reduce reliance on imported animal feed, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has urged Ecogold Company to establish a local animal feed factory in Nigeria. This call was made during a high-level meeting in Abuja between the Honorable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, and Mr. Martins Nwaege, CEO of Ecogold Company.

The proposed facility will produce high-quality animal fattening feed and is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening local feed production, enhancing food security, and supporting livestock productivity nationwide.

According to Minister Maiha, Nigeria currently spends millions of dollars annually on importing animal feeds—a trend the Ministry aims to reverse through partnerships with private sector players like Ecogold. He emphasized that local feed manufacturing is critical to building a resilient, self-sufficient, and modern livestock industry.

“We are implementing wide-ranging reforms, including modern abattoir construction, pasture development, feedlot establishment, and expanded veterinary services. This initiative by Ecogold aligns perfectly with our national livestock transformation goals,” the Minister stated.

He assured Ecogold of full Ministry support and encouraged the company to engage key stakeholders to ensure widespread awareness and accessibility of their products across the country.

In response, Mr. Nwaege revealed that the factory will become operational within two years, with Nigeria serving as a launchpad for further expansion across Africa. The project is also expected to generate employment, particularly for women and youth, while strengthening the entire livestock value chain.

He noted that Ecogold’s products have already received certification from the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), ensuring high standards in quality and safety.

The upcoming animal feed hub represents a critical leap forward in Nigeria’s quest for feed independence, livestock sustainability, and agro-industrial growth. With coordinated efforts between government and industry stakeholders, Nigeria is taking bold steps toward becoming a regional leader in livestock production and animal nutrition.
