Africa CDC and AU-IBAR Unveils Strategies to Tackle Zoonotic and Climate-Linked Health Threats

In a significant move to strengthen the continent’s health resilience, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) have jointly launched two landmark frameworks targeting emerging public health threats in Africa.

The newly released strategies are:

  • Zoonotic Disease Prevention and Control Strategy (2025–2030)
  • Climate Change and Health Strategic Framework (2025–2029)

These groundbreaking documents are designed to operationalize the One Health approach, which recognizes the critical interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health. This integrated strategy is key to preventing future pandemics, particularly in the face of rapid urbanization, environmental degradation, and increasing zoonotic disease spillovers across the continent.

The initiatives aim to:

  • Enhance early detection and prevention of zoonotic diseases
  • Strengthen collaboration across sectors including public health, veterinary, and environmental services
  • Build climate-resilient health systems for African countries

By aligning regional priorities with global health security agendas, these frameworks signal a proactive shift from reactive to preventive health systems in Africa.
