The Federal Government has given the green light for the construction of a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in Gombe State, the first of its kind in Nigeria, as part of efforts to revolutionize the nation’s livestock sector.
The facility, approved under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, will serve as a hub for animal disease diagnosis, treatment, research, and veterinary training. It is expected to significantly improve livestock health, enhance productivity, and strengthen disease surveillance across Gombe and the northern region.
The approval was announced by Malam Sanusi Abubakar, National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, during a two-day technical mission to the state. Abubakar, who led a federal delegation for site assessment, confirmed that Gombe was selected as the pilot location for the groundbreaking facility.
“This is a first in the country. Gombe will serve as the model for other states,” Abubakar stated, assuring stakeholders of continued national support.
Strategic Location for Livestock Innovation
The veterinary hospital will be situated within the 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Development Zone in Gombe — an initiative of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s administration.
The zone already features an ultramodern abattoir, an international livestock market, a tannery, and a leather processing plant, positioning Gombe as an emerging hub for livestock innovation, processing, and agribusiness.
Strengthening Veterinary Services & Export Potential
According to the L-PRES leadership, the hospital will not only expand access to quality animal healthcare but will also boost product certification systems, enabling local producers to meet both domestic and international market standards.
The Gombe State L-PRES Coordinator, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, described the project as a landmark achievement and reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to ensure its smooth execution.
Ms. Asabe, Project Manager of Lubell Nigeria Ltd, the company in charge of construction, assured stakeholders of quality delivery and timely completion in line with agreed specifications.
The visiting delegation — which included representatives from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, the L-PRES National Coordination Office, and various technical experts — emphasized the project’s strategic role in transforming Nigeria’s livestock economy.
