FG Partners REA to Solar-Power Nigeria’s Grazing Reserves

In a bold move to modernize the livestock sector, the Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to deploy solar-powered mini-grids across grazing reserves.

The agreement, signed on 12th September 2025 in Abuja, is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and aims to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s 417 grazing reserves by tackling one of their biggest challenges—lack of infrastructure and reliable energy.

Speaking at the signing, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, described the partnership as a game-changer for pastoral communities.

“This MoU is more than a document—it represents a new dawn for livestock development. With clean solar energy, we will rehabilitate grazing reserves and transform them into hubs of productivity, security, and peace,” he stated.

According to him, solar grids will provide renewable energy to power irrigation systems, ensure year-round access to fodder and water, and improve critical infrastructure such as schools, healthcare facilities, and security posts. The intervention will also generate new jobs and improve the livelihoods of millions of livestock keepers and pastoralists nationwide.

The Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, highlighted that reliable energy is central to all planned livestock interventions, from Renewed Hope Villages to rehabilitated reserves.

Similarly, REA Managing Director, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, affirmed the agency’s commitment to energizing livestock clusters. He noted that the program will support grazing reserves with schools, clinics, abattoirs, and markets, thereby catalyzing livestock development and stimulating rural economies.

The pilot phase will begin in:

  • Wawa-Zange (Gombe State)
  • Wase (Plateau State)
  • Gongoshin (Adamawa State)
  • Kawu, Bwari Area Council (FCT)

The initiative will later expand to other states across Nigeria, laying the foundation for a more resilient, climate-smart, and sustainable livestock sector.
