The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is moving to address water scarcity and pasture shortages at the Kawu Grazing Reserve in Bwari Area Council of Abuja. The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has directed that a plan for the construction of 19 additional earth dams be included in the 2026 national budget.
The announcement follows the Minister’s inspection visit to the reserve, which currently operates with only one functional earth dam serving the entire community.
Supporting Over 35,000 Animals and Irrigation Farming
According to a statement issued by Benjamin Bem Goong, Director of Information and Public Relations, the proposed dams will serve more than 35,000 animals while also supporting irrigation farming, particularly pasture cultivation during the dry season.
Maiha explained that ensuring reliable water, adequate pasture, and improved security would encourage pastoralists to willingly relocate from urban centres to designated grazing reserves, thereby easing farmer-herder tensions and reducing pressure on city spaces.
A Commitment to Livestock Infrastructure
“The government’s commitment is clear—we are investing in sustainable infrastructure to strengthen livestock production and secure lasting peace between herders and farmers,” the Minister stated.
He further noted that collaboration will be strengthened with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, and security agencies to ensure the effective delivery of the project.
Addressing Pastoralist Concerns
Earlier reports from AgroNigeria highlighted the Minister’s first-hand engagement with pastoralist communities during his visit to Kawu, where concerns around water shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and grazing challenges were raised.
Maiha reassured the communities that these issues are now being directly addressed in the federal government’s livestock development agenda.
Building a Sustainable Future for Livestock Development
The Kawu Grazing Reserve is one of several sites earmarked as models for modern livestock production systems under the government’s broader strategy. Strengthening water and pasture facilities through the construction of additional earth dams is expected to boost productivity, reduce conflict, and enhance rural prosperity.
