During the recent virtual townhall hosted by Farm Alert in collaboration with L-PRES the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, 𝗜𝗱𝗶 𝗠𝘂𝗸𝗵𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗵𝗮, made a statement that clearly captures the direction Nigeria is taking.
He explained that the decision by Mr. President to establish the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development was more than a structural change. According to him, that singular act has effectively signaled that the livestock sector is now open for business and ready to take its place as a fully recognized economic force.
The Minister noted that the country is now embarking on a transformative journey that will focus not only on expanding the sector but also on improving its quality, efficiency, and overall impact. The goal, he emphasized, is to position livestock at the center of national priorities, particularly in areas such as food security, job creation, wealth generation, and rural development.
Beyond economics, he also highlighted something often overlooked. A more structured and productive livestock sector has the potential to contribute to peace and social cohesion, especially in regions where livestock production intersects with community livelihoods and land use.
This message carries real implications.
For business owners, it signals opportunity. The government is opening the door for investment across the value chain, from production and processing to logistics, technology, and animal health services.
For livestock farmers, it suggests a shift toward more organized and productive systems.
This could mean better access to support, improved practices, and a more stable operating environment. For the broader Nigerian economy, it reflects a strategic move to unlock the full potential of a sector that has long been underutilized despite its scale and importance.
What stands out is not just the statement itself, but what it represents!.
There is a clear transition from viewing livestock as a traditional activity to treating it as a modern, structured, and investable sector.
The opportunity is now visible. The direction has been set.
The real question is how quickly stakeholders across the system will respond!
